Can. Past simple forms
The past simple affirmative form for the verb can is could. The negative form is could not (full form) or couldn't (short form). The short negative form is used more often.
Affirmative (\(+\)).
- I could go jogging last week, but now I am ill.
- This toy could talk before, but now it's broken.
Negative (\(-\)).
- Sorry, I couldn't come yesterday. It was my dad's birthday.
- We couldn't go surfing last week, the weather was really bad.
