Why I stopped trying to do everything perfectly
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a perfectionist. I was the kind of student who spent hours rewriting an essay just to make sure every sentence sounded right. Every project, every task had to be perfect, no matter how long it took. It wasn’t just about getting the best grades — it was about feeling in control. And even a thought of losing control would make my palms sweaty and my mind go into panic mode.
When I started my first job after college, I thought this mindset would help me stand out. If I worked harder and longer than everyone else, surely I would be successful. But I quickly found out that perfectionism in the workplace is not as rewarding as it sounds. I would stay late trying to finish projects that no one had even asked me to perfect. My boss didn’t even notice, and my coworkers thought I was overcomplicating things.
One day, after a long week of staying up late and obsessing over tiny details in a report, I had a conversation with a mentor. She had been working in the industry for over \(20\) years, and I asked her how she managed to balance everything so well. I expected her to give me some sort of time-management tip, but instead, she just said, “You need to learn how to let things go.”
At first, I was extremely confused. Let things go? But what if I made a mistake? What if someone noticed I hadn’t done my absolute best? She laughed and said, “Perfection isn’t always the goal. Sometimes good enough really is good enough.”
That conversation stuck with me. I started paying attention to how often I was pushing myself to unnecessary extremes, and I realised that most of the time, it wasn’t even for a good reason. I wasn’t more productive; I was just more stressed.
Slowly, I began to make the necessary changes. I set limits on how long I would spend on a task. If I had two hours to finish something, I would stop after two hours, even if it wasn’t flawless. At first, this was incredibly difficult. My instincts screamed at me to keep going, to polish, to tweak just one more thing. But over time, I started to notice that no one else really cared about the tiny details I used to obsess over.
The biggest lesson I learned is that perfectionism is a trap. It convinces you that if you just work a little harder, everything will be perfect, and everyone will notice. But the reality is that people rarely notice perfection — they notice effort, consistency, and creativity.
Perfectionism also holds you back from taking risks. When you’re so focused on getting everything exactly right, you’re less likely to try something new or experimental. You stay in your comfort zone, and growth simply slows down. By letting go of my need to be perfect, I found that I became more open to new ideas and more willing to accept failure as part of the process.
Now, I approach my work — and life — differently. Instead of aiming for perfection, I aim for progress. I focus on what I can accomplish in a reasonable amount of time, and I try to keep the bigger picture in mind. I’ve found that this shift has made me not only more productive but also much happier.
Of course, there are still moments when my old habits kick in. I’ll catch myself redoing something that doesn’t need to be redone or worrying about what others think. But when that happens, I remind myself: perfect isn’t the goal. The goal is to do my best, learn from the experience, and move forward.
