A. Sochi stretches for over \(140\) kilometres along the northeast coast of the Black Sea, making it one of the longest cities in the world. It is squeezed into a narrow strip of land between the warm waves of the sea and the towering peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. This unusual placement means the city is sheltered from the cold winds of the north, creating a pocket of warmth that feels entirely different from the rest of the country.
 

B. The lush greenery that grows along the streets of Sochi often surprises first-time visitors, as it feels more like the Mediterranean than Russia. However, most of the iconic trees — the towering palms, the aromatic eucalyptus, and the bright oleanders — are not native to this region. They were brought here over a century ago as part of a massive botanical experiment to see which exotic species could adapt to the local soil. These "immigrant" plants have since flourished, providing essential shade during the summer months and giving the city its famous "emerald" appearance.

  

C. What makes the region remarkable is the ability to experience two completely different worlds within several hours. In the coastal part of the city, visitors can walk among palm trees in a humid, warm climate. However, as you move inland and go higher, the landscape changes rapidly into a snowy alpine environment. It is one of the few places on earth where it is physically possible to go for a swim in the ocean and then travel up to a snowy mountain peak to ski, all before sunset.
 

D. The rhythm of the city changes drastically between the summer and winter months. During the peak of the heat, the beaches are crowded with people seeking relief in the water, and the city feels like a bustling Mediterranean port. As the air cools, the crowd moves toward the mountains, leaving the seaside almost empty. This peculiarity means that the local economy can remain active throughout the entire calendar year.

  

E. Below the surface of the mountains that tower over the city lies a hidden world of rock and water. For over a century, people have travelled to this area not just for the sun, but for the chemical properties of the local earth. Deep underground, there are natural springs rich in minerals and sulfur. These naturally heated waters have been the foundation of the city’s fame as a healing destination, attracting those who believe in the restorative power of the planet’s internal chemistry.

  

F. Long before it became a global sports destination, the city was defined by its role as a premier health resort for the Soviet elite. During the middle of the \(20\)th century, the coastline was transformed by the construction of massive, palace-like sanatoriums. These buildings were designed in a grand neoclassical style, featuring high columns, marble staircases, and ornate fountains. They were built not just as hotels, but as "temples of health" where workers could receive medical treatments and mineral baths. Today, these aging stone structures remain as silent witnesses to a previous era of grand design.

  

G. The year \(2014\) marked a permanent shift in the city’s identity, moving it away from its past as a quiet seaside retreat toward becoming a high-tech metropolitan hub. The massive investment for the Winter Games resulted in the construction of the Olympic Park, a futuristic cluster of stadiums located on the coastal plain. Beyond the sports venues, the project brought a complete change of the city’s infrastructure, including hundreds of kilometres of new tunnels and bridges. These modern structures have allowed the city to handle much larger crowds, allowing more tourists to enjoy its beauty.
