The Weight of the Future
When I was ten years old, the answer to the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" was simple. Like many children of my generation, I wanted to be an astronaut. I spent my weekends reading books about the solar system and staring at the stars through a small telescope my grandfather had given me. The idea of floating in zero gravity seemed much more appealing than sitting at a wooden desk in a crowded classroom. However, as I entered my final years of high school, that childhood dream was replaced by a more realistic and slightly frightening reality. Choosing a career path is perhaps the first major adult decision a teenager has to make, and for many of us, it feels like a heavy burden that defines the rest of our lives.
For a long time, I felt silent pressure from my family’s expectations. My parents are both successful lawyers, and they naturally assumed I would follow in their footsteps. At the dinner table, they often discussed their latest cases, focusing on the stability and the high salary that a legal career provides. They believed that a law degree was a safety net that would protect me from any economic changes in the future. While I respected their dedication and hard work, I realised quite early on that spending my days reading law books and analysing court documents did not appeal to me at all. I was much more interested in creative fields, specifically graphic design and digital media. However, I kept these interests to myself, fearing that my relatives would view these paths as hobbies rather than "serious" professions.
Everything began to change during a career week held at our school. The school administration invited several guest speakers from various industries to share their experiences with the students. One woman, Mrs. Sterling, who managed a marketing agency, spoke about how she combined her natural love for art with her sharp business skills. Her story really hit home for me because it proved that a career does not have to be a painful choice between following your passion and earning a living. She explained that in the modern world, you can find a middle ground where your creative talents are used to solve real-world business problems.
Following her presentation, I applied for a short summer internship at a local advertising firm. It turned out to be an eye-opening experience that changed my perspective on work entirely. I wasn't just performing simple tasks like making photocopies or getting coffee for the senior staff. Instead, I was allowed to attend creative brainstorming sessions and see how professional marketing campaigns are built from the ground up. I discovered that I genuinely enjoyed the fast-paced environment and the challenge of communicating a message through visual design. More importantly, I learned a vital lesson: professional success comes much more naturally when you are actually excited about the tasks you have to perform every single day.
Now, as the deadline for university applications approaches, I feel more confident in my direction. I have decided to pursue a degree in media communications and digital design. My parents were initially surprised by my choice, but their attitude shifted after I showed them my portfolio and described what I had achieved during my internship. They began to understand that the modern job market is vastly different from the one they entered over twenty years ago. There are now thousands roles in technology and social media that simply did not exist when they were my age.
Of course, I am aware that my first career choice may not be my last. Statistics show that many people change their professional paths several times during their adult lives as they discover new interests. However, I have learned that the most important thing is to make an initial choice based on your own genuine interests rather than trying to satisfy the expectations of others. After all, it is your life, and you are the person who will be putting in the hours of work every day.
