The Tower of London is one of the most famous historical sites in the United Kingdom. Among its many traditions, the presence of ravens is perhaps the most intriguing. Legend has it that the Kingdom of England will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the Tower. This belief dates back to the time of King Charles \(II\), when he ordered that ravens should always be kept in the Tower after an astronomer suggested they brought good fortune and protection.

 

Today, there are usually at least seven ravens at the Tower: six to fulfil the legend and one as a backup. These birds are cared for by the Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, who are responsible for their safety and feeding. The ravens’ diet includes raw meat, eggs, and special biscuits soaked in blood. They are trained to remain close to the Tower grounds, and their wings are clipped to prevent them from flying too far. The clipping is done carefully so the birds can still glide short distances, ensuring they are safe yet mobile.

 

Each raven has its own name and unique personality. Some are known for being particularly curious, while others are described as troublesome. For example, sometimes ravens can steal small items and food from visitors or untie their shoelaces. Despite their occasional misbehaviour, the ravens are treated with great care and attention, as they are considered part of the Tower’s identity and history. Visitors enjoy observing their interactions and learning about their individual traits.

 

Over the years, there have been incidents where ravens left the Tower. One of the most famous cases involved a raven named George, who was removed for bad behaviour after attacking a television antenna. Another raven, Grog, flew away and never came back. Fortunately, new ravens are always brought in to replace those who leave or misbehave, ensuring the tradition continues without interruption.

 

The Tower of London attracts millions of tourists every year, many of whom are fascinated by the ravens. Special guides and information boards help visitors learn about the birds and their connection to British history. Feeding times, which take place twice a day, are especially popular with visitors. During these moments, tourists can watch the Yeoman Warders interact with the birds, demonstrating their strong bond and care.

 

Special tours are also available for those interested in the Tower’s unique history, including stories about its famous prisoners, its use as a royal fortress, and the role the ravens play in its identity. These tours provide an in-depth look at the Tower’s historical significance.
