Bonfire Night
I’m Oliver, and I live in England. Bonfire Night is one of those evenings that stay in your memory for a long time. The holiday goes back to \(1605\), when a plan to blow up Parliament failed. As a child, I didn’t pay much attention to the history. Fireworks were what mattered most to me back then. Now I see the event differently. In many towns, a figure called Guy Fawkes is burnt on one big bonfire, and the tradition feels more symbolic than I once thought. Streets get crowded, people gather in parks, and everyone watches the sky together. It’s usually cold and noisy, but the atmosphere is special. Bonfire Night feels like a shared moment that brings people closer, even if only for one evening.

Pancake Day
My name is Emily, and Pancake Day has always been a familiar tradition in my family. The day started long ago for religious reasons, but today most people simply enjoy the food. At home, Pancake Day rarely goes perfectly. Pancakes fall, some get burnt, and the kitchen quickly becomes messy. Once at school, I took part in a pancake race. I thought it would be easy, but flipping a pancake while running turned out to be harder than expected. Everyone laughed, even those who lost. It isn’t a big celebration, but people look forward to it every year. Pancake Day is simple, slightly chaotic, and fun, which is probably why it has survived for so long.

St Patrick’s Day
I’m Sean from Dublin, and St Patrick’s Day feels different from other holidays. The story of St Patrick is part of Irish history, but for many people today the celebration is more cultural than religious. Over time, it has grown into a symbol of Irish identity.
On the \(17\)th of March, the city changes. Streets fill with music, parades move through the centre, and green becomes the most common colour. I’ve watched the parade many times, and each year the atmosphere feels slightly different. What I enjoy most is the sense of unity. Locals and visitors take part together, and for one day the whole city seems to celebrate the same thing.

Thanksgiving
Hi, I’m Lily, and Thanksgiving has always meant family time for me. The holiday comes from a long tradition of giving thanks, but at home it feels very personal. All relatives arrive early, food is prepared all day, and the house slowly fills with noise.
We usually sit down for dinner in the evening. Before eating, someone suggests saying what we are thankful for. It can feel awkward, but it also creates a calm atmosphere before the meal begins. After many years, I’ve realised that Thanksgiving isn’t really about the food. It’s about slowing down, forgetting about everyday problems, and spending time with people you don’t see often enough.

Winterlude
My name is Alex, and I live in Ottawa, where winter can feel endless. Winterlude is a festival that centers around enjoying the cold and icy days instead of complaining about them. The Rideau Canal turns into a huge skating rink, and the city feels more alive. I’ve spent many afternoons skating with friends, looking at ice sculptures, or warming up with hot chocolate. Even on freezing days, people stay outside longer than usual. Winterlude has changed my attitude to winter, as it has done for many of my friends. Instead of waiting for it to end, I’ve learned to enjoy what it brings.
