People who worry too much about their health they are often called
hypochondriacs. But for some, the coronavirus was created a serious
mental health problem called health anxiety. As some scientists
indicate, this can lead onto losing jobs and even having thoughts
of suicide. In the March \(2020\), John decided to leave his job as a cashier.
When he was not working, he could not stop think that one of the
customers might have had Covid-\(19\) and infect him. Even though he
was young and healthy with a low chance of getting very ill, he was
fixated on the fear of getting sick and die.
Within two weeks, John moved away of his family home in Manchester
into an empty student house than his friends had left behind. "I wanted
to be in a place where nobody was coming or going," he says.
Even after leaving home and quitting his job, his fear of getting sicked
still took over his mind. "I would wake up and check if my body felt okay,"
he shares. "I kept telling me I had symptoms — if I felt tired, I was sure
I had it. I was afraid to go shopping and avoided going out or seeing
anyone. It’s all about the 'what if' instead or what is real… and no one
can promise you that you’ll be okay." John had healthy anxiety.
